What Can Cleaners Actually Claim?
To claim a work expense, you must have spent the money yourself, it has to directly relate to your cleaning job, and you need a record to prove it. Meet all three and it's likely deductible — miss one, and the ATO won't allow the claim.
You spent the money
Reimbursed expenses don't count — the cost needs to come out of your own pocket.
It relates to your job
The expense needs a clear connection to your cleaning work, not just general living costs.
You've got a record
A receipt, invoice or bank statement is the easiest way to back up your claim if the ATO asks.
Cleaner-Specific
What You Can & Can't Claim
The ATO's rules for cleaners, broken down expense by expense.
1. Car Expenses
YOU CAN CLAIM: You can claim the cost of using a car you own when you drive:
-
Directly between separate jobs on the same day (but not if one of the places is your home) — e.g. from your first job as a cleaner to a second job.
-
To and from an alternative workplace for the same employer on the same day — e.g. travelling between different houses you clean.
-
From home directly to an alternative workplace — e.g. travelling to a training centre for a work-related course.
YOU CAN'T CLAIM: The cost of normal trips between home and work, even if you live a long way from your usual workplace or work outside normal hours — e.g. night cleaning shifts.
2. Meal and Snack Expenses
YOU CAN CLAIM: If you receive an overtime meal allowance under an industrial law, award or agreement and it's included in your assessable income, you can claim the cost of the meal you buy and eat when you work overtime.
YOU CAN'T CLAIM: Food, drink or snacks you consume during your shift, even on split shifts or unusual hours, or if you receive an allowance. These are private expenses.

3. Clothing & Laundry Expenses (blurred/gated on page)
YOU CAN CLAIM: The cost of buying, hiring, repairing or cleaning clothing if it is:
-
Protective clothing that helps prevent work-related injury, illness or damage.
-
A compulsory uniform required and enforced by your employer, and clearly identifiable with your workplace.
YOU CAN'T CLAIM: Conventional clothing you wear for work, even if your employer requires it — e.g. active wear, black pants, polo shirts and sneakers.
4. Tools and Equipment Expenses (blurred/gated on page)
YOU CAN CLAIM: The cost of tools and equipment you use for work, including repairs and insurance — e.g. a steam cleaner or vacuum. If a tool or equipment costs:
-
More than $300 — claim a deduction for the cost over several years (decline in value).
-
$300 or less (and isn't part of a set over $300) — claim an immediate deduction.
YOU CAN'T CLAIM: Tools and equipment supplied by your employer or another person. For mixed private/work use, you can only claim the work-related portion.
5. Other Expenses (blurred/gated on page)
YOU CAN CLAIM: The work-related portion of other expenses that relate to your employment, including:
-
Union and professional association fees.
-
Phone costs, with records showing your work-related use.
-
Personal protective equipment you buy, such as gloves and face masks.
YOU CAN'T CLAIM: Private expenses such as music subscriptions, childcare or gifts, or any cost that was met or reimbursed by your employer.

Questions
Cleaner Tax Return FAQs
Can cleaners claim the cost of their uniform?
Yes, if it's a compulsory, employer-branded uniform or genuine protective clothing like non-slip shoes, aprons or gloves. Everyday clothing such as plain t-shirts or activewear doesn't qualify, even if your employer requires you to wear it.
Can I claim laundry costs for my uniform?
Yes. You can generally claim laundry costs without receipts if your claim is $150 or less, and your total work-related expenses claimed without written evidence come to $300 or less. Above that, keep receipts or a diary of your washing.
Can cleaners claim equipment like a steam cleaner or vacuum?
Yes, provided you paid for it yourself and it isn't supplied by your employer. Equipment costing $300 or less can usually be claimed straight away, while anything over $300 is claimed as a deduction for its decline in value over several years.
Can cleaners claim travel between cleaning jobs?
Yes. You can generally claim car expenses for trips directly between two separate jobs on the same day, or between different workplaces for the same employer, such as travelling from one house or site you clean to the next. Normal trips between home and your regular workplace still aren't claimable.
Do I need a logbook to claim car expenses?
Not necessarily. You can use the cents-per-kilometre method based on your estimated work-related kilometres, or keep a logbook for at least 12 weeks to work out your business-use percentage.
What records do I actually need to keep?
A receipt, invoice or bank statement is the safest option. For car expenses without a logbook, keep a simple record of your work-related trips and how you estimated your kilometres.
When is the tax return deadline in Australia?
The Australian financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June. If you're lodging your own return, the usual deadline is 31 October — Tax Falcon can help you get it done well before then.
