Do You Need to Lodge a Tax Return?
Most working Australians need to lodge each year, but it depends on how much you earned and how much tax was withheld from your pay. Lodging a return lets you work out whether you’re owed a refund or have tax to pay. If you’re unsure where you stand, Tax Falcon can help you understand what applies to your situation.

More Than One Income Source
What About Other Income?
More Than One Job
If you had more than one employer during the year, all of your income needs to be reported together. Tax Falcon brings your income information together so nothing gets missed.
Bank Interest & Other Income
Interest from savings, dividends and other income you received during the year also needs to be included. We help make sure it’s captured correctly in your return.
Study Loans
What About HECS HELP?
How It’s Factored In
Have a HECS HELP or other study loan? Your loan details are taken into account when preparing your return. A HECS HELP debt doesn’t automatically mean you must repay, compulsory repayments depend on your repayment income and the applicable ATO threshold.
Worth Remembering
HECS HELP repayments are never tax deductible, no matter how much you’ve paid during the year. We’ll still record your loan details carefully so your return reflects your correct tax position and repayment obligations.

Questions
Standard Tax Return FAQs.
How much does a standard tax return cost in Australia?
A standard tax return with Tax Falcon costs $88, a flat fee. It covers employees with one job, casual work or multiple jobs, with ATO pre-fill and a registered tax agent review included. Students pay $69, and sole trader, property and investor returns start from $229. See Pricing.
Do I have to pay anything upfront?
Where eligible, you can choose to have our $88 fee deducted from your refund once it’s issued, so there’s nothing to pay before you lodge.
Do I need to lodge a tax return?
Generally yes, if you earned more than the $18,200 tax-free threshold or if tax was withheld from your pay. Lodging is how you get withheld tax back as a refund. If you’re unsure, check your income statement in myGov. See tax-free threshold.
What do I need to lodge my tax return?
You need your tax file number (TFN), your bank details for the refund, your income statements (pre-filled from the ATO), and records of any deductions. Add your private health insurance statement if you have cover. See Tax return checklist.
How long does it take to get my tax refund?
The ATO usually issues your notice of assessment within 2 weeks, then pays your refund to your nominated bank account. It can take longer if the ATO reviews your return. Lodging after your pre-fill data is complete, usually by the end of August, helps avoid delays. See common refund delays.
What can I claim as a work-related deduction?
You can claim a cost if you paid for it yourself, weren’t reimbursed, it directly relates to earning your income and you have a record. Common claims are uniforms, tools, phone and internet, and self-education. Working from home is 70 cents per hour. Car travel for work is 88 cents per km, up to 5,000 km. See Tax deductions guide, working from home and car expenses.
What if I had more than one job during the year?
Report every job. The ATO pre-fills each income statement. The tax-free threshold is usually claimed at one employer only, so tax withheld at a second job is often higher, and your return reconciles the total. You may get a refund or owe a little. See PAYG summary vs income statement.
What if I don’t get a refund, or I owe money?
Your notice of assessment shows the amount owing and the due date. If you can’t pay in full, the ATO offers payment plans. Paying late can attract interest, so contact the ATO early. Owing tax usually means too little was withheld during the year.
Does HECS-HELP affect my tax return?
Your HELP repayment is worked out on your tax return, but you only repay once your repayment income passes the ATO threshold ($67,000 for 2025–26). Below it, you repay nothing. The repayment can’t be claimed as a deduction. See HECS-HELP guide.
When is the tax return deadline in Australia?
The usual deadline is 31 October. In 2026 it fell on a Saturday, so Monday 2 November counted as on time. If you’ve missed it, lodge as soon as you can, because late penalties grow the longer you wait. See Tax deadlines and Overdue tax returns.
What are the tax rates for 2025–26?
For residents: $0 to $18,200 pays nothing. $18,201 to $45,000 pays 16%. $45,001 to $135,000 pays $4,288 plus 30%. $135,001 to $190,000 pays $31,288 plus 37%. Above $190,000 pays $51,638 plus 45%. The 2% Medicare levy is added on top. See Tax brackets and Medicare levy calculator.
