Hero Visual: “Key Dates at a Glance” (illustrative mock-up)
-
1 July 2026 — Financial year opens
-
31 Oct 2026 — Self-lodge deadline
-
2027 — Agent-extended deadline (varies)
Illustrative example only — your specific deadline depends on when you engage a registered tax agent.
✓ Interestingly, this hero mock-up card itself uses 2026 dates (1 July 2026 open, 31 Oct 2026 self-lodge deadline) consistent with the FY2025–26 cycle — which conflicts with the H1, meta description, and Quick Answer section immediately below it, which all frame the page around FY2026–27 (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, deadline 31 Oct 2027). The page is inconsistent even with its own hero visual.
Quick Answer (direct-answer callout)
The 2026–27 Australian financial year runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. If you lodge your own tax return, the deadline is 31 October 2027. If you're registered with a tax agent like Tax Falcon by 31 October, your deadline is generally extended well into the following year, the exact date depends on your lodgement program and history.
The Big Ones
The Headline ATO Dates
These are the dates most people actually need to know.
1 July 2026
The 2026–27 financial year begins. From this date you can start preparing to lodge for the year ending 30 June 2027.
31 October 2027
The standard deadline to lodge your own 2026–27 tax return if you're not registered with a tax agent.
15 May 2027
The typical final date for individual returns lodged through a registered tax agent, for the prior financial year.
28 February 2027
The lodgment deadline for individual tax returns for those who don't lodge with a tax agent by 31 October and haven't received a further extension, once a default assessment or penalty process may begin.
⚠ These four dates are not internally consistent with each other. “1 July 2026” and “31 October 2027” fit a FY2026–27 framing (opens July 2026, self-lodge deadline October 2027). But “15 May 2027” is explicitly labeled “for the prior financial year”, which — read literally against the page's own FY2026–27 framing — would mean FY2025–26, i.e. a date that falls chronologically before the FY2026–27 self-lodge deadline the page just stated. And “28 February 2027” as a late-lodgment consequence date sits between the other two, muddying the sequence further. The dates read as though they were assembled from two different years' worth of ATO lodgment-program dates rather than one consistent cycle.

Register by 31 October
You need to be on a registered agent's books by this date for the extension to apply.
Extended deadlines vary
Your exact extended deadline depends on the agent's lodgment program and your own lodgment history.
Later is still better than never
Even if you've missed 31 October, registering with an agent as soon as possible can help minimise penalties.
Running a Business
